Weight Loss Surgery

The main types of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery are:

  1. Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

    • About 75–80% of the stomach is removed.

    • You feel full faster and eat less.

    • Most common bariatric surgery today.

  2. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

    • Creates a small stomach pouch and bypasses part of the small intestine.

    • Reduces food intake and calorie absorption.

    • Often helps improve type 2 diabetes.

  3. Adjustable Gastric Band (Lap-Band)

    • A band is placed around the upper stomach to make a smaller pouch.

    • Less common now because weight loss is usually less effective.

  4. Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS)

    • Combines a gastric sleeve with intestinal bypass.

    • Causes major weight loss but has higher risk of vitamin deficiencies.

  5. SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass)

    • A newer variation of the duodenal switch.

    • Strong weight-loss and diabetes-control results.

Bariatric surgeries work by:

  • Restricting how much food you can eat

  • Reducing calorie absorption

  • Changing hunger hormones
